1887, 17 Aug Birth of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica
1901 Leaves Church of England school in sixth standard, apprenticed to printer Alfred E. Burrowes, his godfather
1905 Arrives in Kingston from Port MAria: employed with P.A. Benjamin Manufacturing Co., eventually appointed foreman of the printing department.
1907, Nov. Elected vice-president of the kingston Typographical Union (compositors branch)
1908, Dec. Joins strike of the printers: strike collapses after one month and union leader absconds
1910, 20 Apr Elected Assistant Secretary of the National Club founded by the popluar S. A. G. Cox
1910, 24 Aug Represents St. Ann's Parish in Island Elocution Contest
1911 Resides in Port Limón, Costa Rica: works for The Nation La Nacionale
1911 Apr-May Takes up residence in London, England; attends clases at Birkbeck College; travels in Europe and the British Isles
1914, 1 Aug After returning to Jamaica, launches The Universal Negro Improvement and Conservation Association and African Communities League in Kingston
1915, 24 Aug Announces plan for establishing an Industrial Farm and Institute in Jamaica
1916, 23 Mar Arrives in United States to secure support for the proposed institute in Jamaica
1916, 9 May Holds first public lecture in New York City at St. Mark's Church Hall; leaves afterward on a year long speaking tour of thirty-eight states
1917, June Returns to New York and organizes first American branch of the UNIA
1918, June Incorporates UNIA
1918, July Incorporates ACL and publishes official Constitution and Book of Laws for the government of the UNIA and ACL
1918, 17 Aug Publishes first issue of The Negro World to become the worldwide official organ of the UNIA
1918, 11 Nov Cables nine-point Peace Aims of the UNIA to Allied governments for consideration in settling the question of Africa at the Peace Conference in Paris
1919, 27 June Incorporates the Black Star Line, Inc. under the laws of the State of Delaware
1919, 27 July Establishes Liberty Hall, official meeting place and cradle of the UNIA, at 120 W. 138th St. in New York
1919, 5 Aug Arrested on charges of publishing a criminal libel against New York Assistant District Attorney Edwin P. Kilroe
